What three pilots showed

The same agrivoltaics produced anything from higher to lower yields depending on how deep the shade was and which crop grew beneath it. Design starts by deciding the shade a crop can take, then verifying it in the field.

Pilot Shade Crops Result vs open field Lesson
Ovalau, Fiji about 60% shade eight crops incl. lettuce, taro, cucumber, long bean, chili, tomato lettuce +54%, taro +14% · long bean and cucumber −76% · chili and tomato no fruit deep shade suits leafy and root crops
Bogor, Indonesia 34.9% shade (fixed 15° during the trial) soybean, shallot, chili soybean +106% wet season, dry season n.s. · shallot bulb weight ×3.1 · chili fruit weight ×8 moderate shade buffers tropical crop stress
CASE, Jamaica measured irradiance −41% (tracking) kidney beans, sweet corn kidney bean seed −38%, corn ear −43% (first season) for sun-loving crops the light loss is a cost

Sources: Agronomy 2026 16(1):116 and 16(8):831; trial reports with IPB (Bogor) and CASE (Jamaica). Fiji and Indonesia use projected-area shading, Jamaica the measured irradiance reduction. Jamaica shows the first 2026 season.

Goals we contribute to

  • SDG 2

Zero Hunger: farmland and food production maintained

  • SDG 7

Affordable and Clean Energy: renewable generation on farmland

  • SDG 13

Climate Action: adaptation (shading, temperature buffering) and mitigation (renewables)

Impact indicators (CO₂ avoided, generation, farmland preserved) are published as measured or design values per project, with sources, once confirmed.
